Description
If you like your literature to have deep philosophical merit and characters painted in multiple shades of grey, Redwall probably isn't for you, but the series holds a special place in my heart nonetheless; Mattimeo was the first full-length novel I ever read for myself, and the series as a whole has had a pretty big influence on me both in terms of my own writing and my personal development. With regards to the former, if I don't plan on having them switch sides or otherwise come to some arrangement with the heroes, I like my villains to be unrepentantly bad, and with regards to the latter, I owe a not-inconsiderable amount of my moral code to Martin the Warrior.
I reread Lord Brocktree the other day. I'd forgotten how much I liked Ungatt Trunn as a villain; he came closer to winning than a lot of other Redwall antagonists, and he put up a hell of a fight when push came to shove.
