Interesting point you've brought up as well. I guess it's because we expect a fantasy novel to have dragons and magic and things, but since we share the little details like metals glowing when they melt we expect those to be the same. Fun things to think about.
On an intellectual level, it was obviously because they weren't really allowed to pour molten gold over the actor's head. But still. You notice these things.
Which I'd think most people would count as a very good thing! Do you know, by chance, what they used instead?
I really don't know. I did a bit of googling and found out that they attached a bald cap and a couple of little smoke machines to him to make it look like he was burning, but nothing on what they actually used for the gold. It's kind of glutinous, though, so it's probably some kind of opaque syrup.
Huh. They certainly got inventive! I mean, they had to and all, but still. Impressive. Maybe it was some kind of weird edible syrup, like the 'horse's heart' they gave Daenerys to eat!
At any rate, we can probably assume it wasn't toxic. I'm always interested in finding out what TV shows and films use for non-CG effects; there's often a very ingenious solution involved. For example, the Palantir in LotR was a ball of heavily lacquered wood.
Well, as reasons go, that's not a terribly bad one. At least she's immune to it; somehow I don't think being prone to being magicked would improve her opinions about wizards. Also, I keep thinking about her meeting Gandalf and Nita and Kit and a bunch of others, and wondering what they (particularly the latter two) would make of her. It'd be interesting. I imagine she also has a problem with the vegetarians who have gone without meat for so long that it makes them sick to eat it? And the ones that eat fish and/or chicken but not red meat? That one's more unfortunate.
I would hope not, yeah! I didn't know that about the Palantir, but it makes sense. The finished product looks very good, too.
Flix keeps a list of wizards she has yet to bite. Those three are on it, although Kit is listed as 'Other Kit' because she already has a different wizard called Kit on it, and like hell can she spell 'Rodriguez'. Yes, she has a problem with both of those groups, though the latter more so. The former inspire the sort of contempt one might feel for someone who's drunk so much they've needed more than one liver transplant, whereas the latter inspire outright rage due to what she sees as the hypocrisy of it.
My behind-the-scenes book says that they experimented with glass for the Palantir, but none of them turned out all right so they resorted to the wooden ball and touched it up with CG a little.
I LOVE the style btw
Very pretty... especially the feathers
