Description

"Tam, if you don't get my chief rigger out of the infirmary by tomorrow I swear I'm throwing both of you out of the cargo doors!"

***

Captain Isla Price of the Airship Beowulf is one of my favourites out of my characters and certainly the biggest badass out of the human cast of the increasingly-inaccurately-named Steamworld, but for some reason I hardly ever draw her. This is because she's difficult to draw - she's supposed to look fairly androgynous (that waistcoat would cover more of her chest without the rope pushing it aside), but I find it kind of difficult to do 'androgynous' without edging too far into 'masculine'. She's been mistaken for a man a few times in her younger days, and now wears her hair long to avoid it.

That earring is the only jewellery she ever wears. It's the only thing of her mother's that'll fit her, as she's considerably taller and more broad-shouldered than her mother was. That pink patch on the side of her neck is part of a much larger souvenir of her second-ever dragon hunt, back when she was still crewing on board the Dracocide Airship Saint George. The hunt was ultimately successful, but the seventeen-year-old Captain ended up with one massive third-degree burn covering her entire back and most of her right arm, and probably would have died had the Saint George's surgeon had less experience with bad burns. She's not ashamed of the scar in the slightest - like Sarkany, she's of the opinion that all a scar means is that you were tough enough to survive whatever gave it to you - but she doesn't really appreciate the stares that it gets if she walks about with it on display, so she prefers to keep it covered.

I actually drew the lineart for this on paper, then scanned it in and traced over it with the tablet.

Yay, the Captain! It's good to see her drawn out...she looks pretty close to how I imagined her, too! (I like it when my imagination is fairly accurate. XD) If I ever knew most of these details about how she dresses, I've forgotten, though the basics go without saying, so it's nice to see these details for myself. They really work for her, too. Something about her reminds me that she was an air pirate at first -- the earring is a nice touch, and I've always liked waistcoats. Also, nice cameo by the Beowulf. I don't think I've ever seen it before...that's quite a vivid shade of blue. XD

This picture makes me wonder: where did she get that hat?
