Afanc

Description

As large aquatic carnivores, afancs fill a similar ecological niche to alligators, but as mammals they prefer a much colder climate and are native to the enormous Gorsfen marshland between the Chainbreaker Hills and the Dragon's Teeth mountains. They live roughly as long as a human and breed once every couple of years, but fortunately most of the young don't make it past a few weeks of age or the Gorsfen would quickly become overrun with them. Fifteen to twenty feet is about average for the length of a fully-grown afanc; the largest ever seen, a male nicknamed Old Stonejaw, was twenty-eight feet long at the time of his death. They are typically ambush predators, lying in wait just below the water surface for prey such as deer, goats or the occasional human to wander close enough, and display enough intelligence to work out exactly how to kill most quickly. Also, despite looking like what you might get if an otter shagged a crocodile, they're actually more closely related to whales. They have immensely powerful neck and shoulder muscles to hold up the weight of such a long head.

(In our world, the afanc is a vaguely-described water monster from Welsh mythology; I decided to loosely - emphasis on loosely - base the design of mine on Ambulocetus, which is indeed an ancestor of our modern whales.)
